                                             Ten Cool Facts About Wolves

1. There are three species of wolves in the world; grey wolf, red wolf and Ethiopian wolf.

2. There are five sub species of the grey wolf including the arctic wolf, the timber wolf, the rocky mountain wolf ,
the Mexican wolf and the great plains wolf.

3. Wolves live in packs that include the ALPHA pair - the adult parents - and offspring from recent years.
Unrelated wolves may join a pack also.

4. Grey Wolf packs can range up to 8 wolves, in North Western Canada as many as 30 live in one pack.
Canadian  wolves territory can range from 300 to 1000 miles.

5. Grey wolves have one litter of 4 to 6  pups in the spring. The pups weigh about 1 pound at birth.

6. Adult grey wolves weigh between 50 to 130 pounds. They can be up to 6 feet in length from the tip of their nose to
    the tip of their tail.

7. Grey wolves eat large hoofed mammals primarily; deer, elk, moose and caribou. They will also eat birds or small
mammals as a secondary food source.

8. There have been very few encounters between wolves and humans. They are due  mostly to habituation.
A person has a better chance of being  stung by a bee, being struck by lightning or hitting a deer with a car than
being attacked by a wolf. Wolves are animals that are best kept at a respectful distance as are bears and cougars.

9. Grey wolves live from 6 to 13 years in the wild and up to 16 years in captivity.

10. Grey wolves travel 10 to 30 miles per day in search of food. They cover long distances at a comfortable trot and
can sprint up to 35 miles per hour while chasing prey.
